Resumen

Aim: Several studies have shown the increase of serum levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in patients with chronic periodontitis; which could be determined by the severity of the clinical status of periodontitis. The Aim of this study was to evaluate the plasma levels of TNF-alpha, IL-6 and IL-1B and determine its correlation with different clinical parameters of the periodontal status. Methods: One hundred and six adult patients with different conditions of periodontal status were evaluated following these clinical parameters: plaque and gingival index, bleeding, suppuration, pocket depth and attachment level. A blood sample was taken from each patient to assess serum concentrations of TNF-alpha, IL1-B and IL-6 by means of flow cytometry. TNF-alpha, IL1-B and IL-6 levels were compared by using the Kruskal Wallis test with the different clinical parameters which were categorized by interquartil ranges and extension percentage. A Bonferroni correction was done for the variables that shown statistically differences. Results: The levels of IL-6 correlated significantly with the presence of more than 50% of periodontal pockets (p<0.05), TNF-alpha and IL-1B correlated with the percentage of affected sites with attachment loss (p<0.05), however, neither of these cytokines correlated with the severity of the periodontal disease or other parameter evaluated. Conclusions: The extension of periodontal disease seems to be the clinical indicator that correlated the most with the presence of systemic inflammation.
